Also the frequency of pop ups can be controlled directly from the AVG Internet Security app or can be even turned off.

Open AVG Internet Security, click Menu -> Settings -> General -> Personal Privacy. Uncheck 'Show offers for other AVG products', 'Shows offers for 3rd party products' and click OK to save the settings.
If you need anything else, do not hesitate to let us know.

If you do not have an active AVG subscriptions for programs installed on your PC. You will receiving pop-ups to use our paid features.

Thanks - did so - but am still getting repeated messages to buy other products - very irritating.
Keeps asking if I want to scan my computer - and then says I must buy. When I say no it reverts to do you want to scan your computer - repeat, repeat.

Are you being asked to scan for performance or privacy issues when you run a virus scan using AVG Internet Security?
Could you provide a screenshot of the pop up?

We will help you to disable the pop-ups.

Thank you for clariying us with screenshots. 
AVG Internet Security provides pop up for other AVG programs in order to improvize/personalize the existing program. Unfortunately, there isn't an option to refrain from these campaign messages which usually appear after clicking 'Scan' on your computer.
We do have an option to disable the pop-ups appearing on the main user interface. As you have configured the settings already, the campaign message should appear on the main user interface. In this case, we request you to uninstall (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Uninstall-AVG-Driver-Updater) AVG Driver Updater from your PC and check the status.
