Previously working antivirus now indicates update required

I had same 2015 version - same error message - same "successful" update being reported,
Same "AVG now gives a red warning saying computer update required"
1. I downloaded the 2018 version
2. uninstalled the 2015 version
Now I have the SAME problem -

  • "successful" update being report saying "you are fully protected"
  • yet still showing red warning saying update required and "you are not fully protected" !!!
Further problem -
  1. cannot download photos to laptop AVG says "you do not have access privileges" !!!
  2. all documents are locked by AVG  "locked for editing by unknown user" !!!!
  3. all photos are locked by AVG  "locked for editing by unknown user"  !!!
WHAT HAS AVG DONE TO MY SYSTEM??? ! ! ! !

Hello John,

Hi AVG Community

I have an old computer, protected by AVG antivirus 2015. The spec for the computer is…
AMD Athlon XP 1900+, Windows XP Pro SP3.
The important fact here, is that the processor does not support the "SSE2" cpu instruction set which has been more recently introduced in the industry. This stops me from being able to update the product to more recent versions of AVG 2016 (AVG crashes), and I have had a long discussion with AVG on this (ticket #04075589).
So I have stuck with AVG 2015 and when I go to the AVG "about" screen the report shows …
AVG Version 2015.0.6201
Virus Database Version 4793/15883
Link Scanner Version 3015

For years this has worked.
This morning, despite a "successful" update being reported, AVG now gives a red warning saying computer update required and also windows XP balloon appears to warn of problem with AVG Antivirus.

Since no updates occur for the 2015 suite of software, I think the problem would appear to be related with the virus definition database. Is there anyone else out there with similar XP systems relying on AVG and now experiencing this problem?

Can anyone help apart from advising me "that I need to update my processor" and phrases like "AVG 2015 is no longer supported" …

… many thanks
… JP

John, to analyze the issue, I need to submit your concern to our senior technicians along with other diagnostic logs.
I have sent you an email with steps on how to collect and upload the data required for analyzing your issue. Please check your inbox and spam/junk folder as well.

Please also share a screenshot (http://avgclick.me/getscreenshot) of the AVG dashboard where is says the last virus definitions installed are on Aug 14th. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.

Chris, if your hardware supports, we'd recommend to upgrade to latest version of AVG to resolve the issue.

John, we request you to ignore the virus definitions update that you see on this https://www.avg.com/download-update as it is the offline update.
The latest version of AVG doesn't have an option to install the offline downloaded update files.
As informed earlier, do remove existing AVG version and install the latest version to get regular updates.
Thanks.
