Hello Derek,
I apologize for the inconvenience caused. I would suggest you to add the IP address of your external hard drive to AVG firewall's exceptions list to resolve the issue. Please refer the steps in this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-block-or-allow-IP-addresses-in-Firewall on how to set AVG firewall to allow particular IP address.
Dear community,
I am having problems connecting to my Western Digital "myworldbook" external drive, connected via a local ethernet. Always the problem ends up being an AVG issue, it is really sensitive to AVG setup, any change and it disrupts it again & takes many attempts to get it all going again.
Whatever AVG does, it persuades the WD device to go into a mode that needs a hard reset to bring it back to life.
When I use the exact same WD drive with my work computer, which uses a different protection system, no problem, only when I use my personal machine running AVG does it stop - but once it stops, nothing can talk to the WD drive until I give it another hard reset.
I think the AVG behaves better when it is set to ask for user intervention before allowing if any internet interaction should take place - I set that mode hoping to trap it querying talking to the WD drive - but it never does, but in that mode, it seems more reliable, turn that off - WD dies in seconds.
Any ideas, please.
