Hi Simon,
We'll do our best to sort it out.
Let's check which component of AVG is causing this issue. Please open AVG Internet Security > Menu > Settings > components > click on toggle bar to disable each component and check the status.
Make sure that you're using the latest version of AVG Internet Security (18.8 and higher).
Could you share the screenshot of the error to analyse it further?
You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on "Answer" & then click on the "Image" [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.
It turned out to be the Ransomware Protection. Have uninstaled it and it works fine.
I have a program (Trading Paints) that extracts data from an online server (iRacing), writes a temp file which then should unzip to another file on my PC. This process works when AVG is turned off but as soon as I turn turn it back on again, I get error meaages from the program thats trying to complete the process. This suggests that it is something to do with AVG blocking the process. I have written exceptions for all the programs concerned and all the folders involved but still no joy.
Please help.
Here is a log of the error from my program (Trading Paints)

It repeats the error every time it tries to update the file. But like I say, this error does not happen when AVG is turned off
I have been a subscribed AVG customer for tens of years now.
Any help would be good.

Thank you for verifying it, Simon.
It is not recommended to uninstall the whole component as it impacts your device's security. Re install Ransom ware protection, click 'Hacker Attacks' on main user interface, click Open on Ransom ware protection to open Ransomware settings.
Clicked on Protected folders and remove the temp folder. Then click on Blocked/Allowed apps, check if the application (Trading Paints) is added in blocked apps list. If it is, remove it and add it in Allowed app list.
