This isn't the usual behavior of AVG program. Hence, we'd suggest you to try repairing the program once to check if it helps.
In the meantime, you can use web email via browsers to access your emails as an alternate workaround.

I have two problems with the e-mail protection of the AVG Free version. Today I noticed that I didn't receive any e-mails in Thunderbird. When I disabled the e-mail protection, I started to receive e-mails all of a sudden. So somehow AVG is blocking my e-mails.
The second problem is with sending e-mails. I get an error quite regularly when sending e-mails from AVG. At the time of writing this I cannot recreate that error, but I remember researching about that error a while ago and I remember it has something to do with a threshold when you surpass a certain amount of sent e-mails.
Is there a way to solve this?
