Protection disabled

I tried that and there is no change in my problem.  On top of that I have just been automatically renewed when it is not funtional.  I am running (or try to run AVG Ultimate).  It appears to be fine our laptop but not the desktop, both of which are Windows 7.

Note: First run AVG Clear tool and then run AVG remover tool

I keep getting a message saying that my protection is disabled.  When I click on "Fix Now", it goes through the motions of updating, but the warning remains. 
Update says that I have the latest versions available.
Restarting the computer changes nothing.
If I go through the "Internet Security" tab, it tells me that I need to update my version of AVG, but again clicking on update does not change anything.

How do I fix this please?
