Protection is Disabled - Fix Now

I am getting the message, on opening AVG Internet Security, 'Protection is Disabled'; 'Protection will be automatically enabled after PC restart'; 'Fix Now'. When I click on 'Fix Now', an update begins but terminates after a few seconds. I have tried 'Repair' in Control Panel, but this does not work either. How do I fix this problem, please?
