"Protection is Disabled" when not set to auto update

Hello,
I'm sorry for any inconvenience caused. However, if you select manual update and then you should do AVG manual updates (open AVG > menu> settings > update > update settings > select manual update) once in three days to updates their virus definitions. If you will not update your AVG program manually, then it will automatically change their user interface not protected and also if you click fix now option (which will enable all the default settings) then your protection will get enabled, automatic update will get enabled which is default/recommended. Regrading computer slowdown when AVG and it's automatic updates are enabled, well, we want to detect malware. To do that, we need recognition/search patterns to compare files with our database of known threats. Those patterns (sometimes called fingerprints or signatures) are not really that big, but there is a really huge number of threats out there, and therefore we need many signatures too.

Thank you for your replies, Alok.  I forgot to mention that AVG is running under Win 7 SP1, on an i5 with 4GB RAM.

Even if I perform manual updates to both the Virus Definitions and Program, the "Protection is Disabled" notice and "Fix Now" button remain.

I suppose it's irrational of me to go without any AV product.  Even if AVG isn't protecting my system (which probably isn't the case), it can stay if it doesn't bog my system down.

My goal is to start the computer up and be able to use it as soon as possible.  AVG with auto update is one of many processes that prevent that.

I have AVG free set to notify when updates are available to the virus definitions and program.  But AVG thinks this is something to warn me about.  It says, "Protection is Disabled" in red and offers a "Fix Now" button to do a restart and re-enable it.  But clicking that button sets updates back to automatic, which makes my computer very slow to start up.

Isn't there some registry setting like "let me shoot myself in the foot" where it warns about only real problems?

I'm getting very close to uninstalling and doing without any AV.

version: 17.5.3021
