Protection is disabled

The dashboard tells me my Protection is Disabled and I have read and tried 'solutions' from these support pages such as Repair/Fix Now without success. The best I have achieved is to get the 'Out of date' message but I am now back to Protection is Disabled despite ticks against each of the 5 icons. I note that the next solution seems to be Uninstall the re-install which I'm not confident about given 1. My own abilities and understanding of computers, 2. other posts suggesting I may get 'access denied' leaving me with nothing. Any help would be appreciated
