Purchased a new 1 year licence after my old licence expired. Tried to install it but cannot get into the program

I have purchased a new 1 year license but dont know how to install it. It says I have to open the AVG program but when I click on the icon and it opens up to say my old license has expired I insert my new license number and it says the license is valid, but when I click on activate it says it cannot connect to the progam
