Random:js/fakebsod.a

Hi Edward,
It's disappointing but don't worry. We will help you. May I know the web browser in which you are facing this issue? Have you tried to reset your browser and delete the add-ons? Are you receiving this infection pop up in web browser or did you locate the file in your computer? Thank you. Komal, AVG Customer care.

Hi Edward,
Thank you for your quick response. We hope that it might be a fake pop up in your web browser. We request you not to call those numbers that appears on that pop up. You can reset your web browser to fix this issue.
To reset Internet Explorer settings, please follow the below steps:
1. Close all Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer windows that are currently open.
2. Reopen Internet Explorer.
3. Click the Tools button, and then click Internet options.
4. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.
5. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.
We also recommend you to update AVG after resetting the browser and check. Thank you. Feel free to contact us for further assistance. Komal, AVG Customer Care.

AVG Free version does not seem to find the malware random:js/fakebsod.a, a browser infection.
MS have a brief webpage on it, some more (at repetetive length) can be found on the internet.
msert seems to remove the infection

Thanks for that Kormal.I found it.
Might I suggest that you arange to have the AVG article "What is  Potentially Unwanted Program" rewritten to make this point clearer ?  I think I followed the instructions, and they don't mention scans, Whole Computer Scan…
Further the default setting, I notice, is not set for thorough scanning, which I would use, nor tracking cookie detection - I regard cookies as a form of spyware.  Unfortunately it is my belief that many websites deny access if yyou block their cookies, so the next best thing is remove them asap

I have visited the link in your pist above re enable PUP detection, but the options listed in sec 4,
Report potentially unwanted programs and spyware threats
Report enhanced set of potentially unwanted programs

are not present.

Hello Edward,
Thank you for providing us with the screenshot. It seems that you have clicked on the Appearance settings of the AVG program. Please click + next to Scans in the left part of the window, and then select Whole Computer Scan.

Thank you Kormal, for taking an interest in my post, which was designed to inform other AVG users.
I am using IE11 0.9600.17959 ipdate 11.0.22 K 3078071 under Windows 7 Home Premium on an HP Pavilion dm4-1050ea

No I have not tried to reset my browser (what's that ?).  On infection (I assume) I get in separate full sized window this stuff about how I've been infected and in a smaller window on top I get the nmber to call.  These windows do not close with clicking the red x at the TR; this just opens another copy of the window.  When I close ie processes in task manager a new one springs up.  If I close the IE master process I close all open windows including the ne showing malware.

Closing this process makes the obvious signs of malware (ie warning of infection etc) go away, but I don't know what remained.

Running AVG (scan computer) finds no infectoins. running msert partially removes 2 infections with restart required for completion
