Reactivating AVG internet security with new license

Jyst renewed internet security and proceeded to activvate the programme with the new license.  Copied/pasted the licenses number in the appopriate box and pressed activate button to confirm.  Programme box closes and when re-opened the old license number remains.  The programme box stills shows that I am protected to end of April 2017.
Why will the reactivation not recognise the new license number?

Thanks for your prompt reply.  The new license number, provided on renewal, is not the number in the in the appropriate field.  The activation instructions suggested that the new number would replace the old one.  Will I continue to be protected notwithstanding that the reactivation process has not recognised the new license number?
