From your description, it seems that the instructions to activate is for the older version of AVG.
To activate : Open AVG Internet Security - My AVG (at top right) - My subscriptions - Enter activation code (Code has been sent to you via email. Reason being, privacy concerns).

I have gone into "support" as requested but cannot find the reactivate facility to get the protection I have paid for. It isn't anywhere obvious. What am I doing wrong?.
