The email you received must be for the older version.
To check if AVG Internet Security got installed on your computer, please follow the below steps.
Open AVG installed on your computer, click on "My AVG->My Subscription".
If it shows the expiry date as "4/27/2020", it means that your AVG program is already activated.
If you see an incorrect expiry date please click on "Enter your license number" and activate the product.

The problem is that if I go into AVG 'my subscription', the correct licence number is shown and the correct expiry date, but if I try to log out I get the message that my subscription will be downgraded to 'free' unless my licence is reactivated - and I can't find a way of doing that.
