Recent changes in AVG functionality

Allen,
Thank you for reaching out to us with your concerns. Yes, we are aware of this last scan - few second ago issue and our developers are working on it. File Shredder option for Recycle Bin is not available which is being analyzed by our development team. I request you to right click on any folders and check if you have AVG File Shredder option, if not, you can share its screenshot ( http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-create-a-screenshot ) here so that we will collect log files and escalate it. You have installed AVG Antivirus free version, you can check whether all other components are working fine, it should work. AVG Antivirus will works fine with Windows XP SP3. We will perform some basic troubleshooting steps and escalate it for both issues. We are here if you need further help.

I have purchased AVG Antivirus since 2015, with no apparent problems. I have received excellent support when needed. I am past due to purchase another 2-year subscription and now have the free AV running. After my last computer restart to allow an AVG update I am seeing 2 problems:
1) The dashboard indicates a complete scan was last run just a few seconds ago, when it was actually over a day ago.
2) I can no longer use the file shredder feature.
I am ready to make a decision what antivirus to buy, and I am concerned. I know there was a major change to AVG corporate structure because they are now owned by Avast.
Before I decide I want to know:
a) If there are any other non-obvious problems with AVG functionality that I may not have noticed yet.
b) Is this set of problems associated with the free version, or an early sign that the design team effectiveness has broken down?
c) Are these problems associated with my continuing to use the XP operating system? I know that is a convenient fall-back excuse, but I want to know for sure. I don't want to be forced to switch AV companies or operating systems, either one. Yes, I will eventually.
d) Are there any work-arounds to problems 1 & 2 listed above?
Thanks for any advice or help.
