Reinstalling AVG Antivirus Free

I guess I am an idiot. But, I will  tell you one more time. I have a dial-up internet connection which is slow and my operating system is Windows XP PRO SP3.

George

Five days ago I turned my computer on and discovered that the AVG symbol had an exclamation mark in the center. I clicked on the symbol and discovered that two of my normally green circles were red. I clicked on the button "Fix Now" but that did nothing. So, I then turned my computer off, waited 15 seconds and then turned it back on. AVG opened with the same results.

I then called your toll free telephone support number but was told that you no longer support AVG Antivirus Free. However it was suggested to me that I uninstall AVG from my computer then reinstall it. I then went to my [Control Panel] then [Add/Remove Programs] and removed AVG. I then restarted my computer. I went to your web site and downloaded the latest version of AVG Antivirus Free and tried to install it. I got an "installation failure" screen.

I then went to your support web site and tried to log onto your "Support Community" but my browser will not work with your web site. However, I found a telephone number that I has to pay to use for support.  The young man who answered told me that I had to download and run "AVGRemove.exe first. I downloaded it and ran it. I then tried to reinstall AVG Antivirus Free again. I got the same "Installation Failed" screen. I called your support team again and told them what happened. They told me I had to pay them $19.99 for them to install your program. I told them that was not possible because I have a dial-up connection to the internet and it was very slow. I was then told there was nothing I could do.

So, I am now writing to you begging you to send me a step by step list of things I need to do to reinstall AVG Antivirus Free.

Thank you so much for your help.

Aravindh,

You are aware that I have a dial-up internet connection and am using Windows XP Pro SP3 for my operating system aren't you.

George

This is what I did, step by step.

1. Read your entire message.

2. Removed Malwarebytes via the control panel.

3. Ran AVG Remover, nothing to remove reported but ran anyway.

4. When AVG Remover finished, I clicked on restart. My computer shut down and restarted.

5. Did a complete search of my C:\ drive for AVG. Found the following folders:
          Found C:\AVGRemover, I deleted it.
          Found C:\AVG_ResetAccess, I deleted it.
Found 52 folders in C:\windows\Temp\AVG*.*, I deleted them all.
          Found C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\AVG Secure Search,
               I deleted it.
          Found C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\AVG Files, I deleted it.
          Found C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVG, I deleted it.
          Found C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVG Secure Search,
               I deleted it.
          Found C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVG9, I deleted it.
          Found C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local settings\Application Data\AVG Files, I              deleted it.
          Found C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local settings\Application Data\AVG
               Secure Search, I deleted it.
          Found C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local settings\Application Data\AVG
               Security Toolbar, I deleted it.
Found hundreds of AVG log files, I deleted them all.

When I was finished the only AVG files I had on my computer were AVGRemover.exe and the
latest AVG Setup file in my "C:\Downloads" folder.

6. I then searched my C:\ drive for "Remover." The only files there were some .pf files in
     C:\windows\Prefetch.

7. I then loaded my browser and reread your message to me.

8. I then went to "http://www.avg.com/us-en/download" and downloaded the AVG Antivirus
     FREE file again.

9. I then double-clicked on the installation file I just downloaded.

10. The first screen that came up said "Preparing AVG for installation".
The next screen said, "Downloading Installation Components."
The next screen asked me to click on "Install AVG."
The next screen said, "Downloading AVG Antivirus Free Edition".
Then it went to, "Installing AVG Antivirus Free Edition." but it was still downloading
                something.
Then the screen changed to the dreaded, "Installation Failed"!

What the fudge!!!???

Hello George,

I can really understand how frustrated you are at the moment! Kindly accept my genuine apologies for all the inconvenience caused so far. I assure you to do my best to help you today. I will provide you step by step instructions to remove AVG Traces and to reinstall AVG AntiVirus FREE.

Please remove conflicting antivirus products if any (http://avgread.me/1K1IqEh) and then remove AVG traces using remover tool( http://aa-download.avg.com/filedir/util/AVG_Remover.exe ). Please restart to complete the uninstalling process. After restarting your computer, you may need to manually delete any remaining AVG files and also 'search' for a folder "AVG Remover"(usually in 'C' drive) and please delete it manually. And then install your AVG program by downloading from http://www.avg.com/us-en/download .

Thank you. Komal, AVG Customer Care.

[Karthikeya] "After which you can install AVG."

No Karthikeya, I can not. This is what I did.

1. Ran AVGRemover.exe. Nothing to remove but ran anyway.

2. Restarted my computer.

3. Deleted folder C:\AVGRemover.

4. Searched my C:\ drive for any file beginning with "AVG". Deleted everything except

installation files and AVGRemove.exe in my C:\downloads\ folder and several .PDF manuals.

5. Reread your message to me.

6. Went to "http://www.avg.com/us-en/avg-antivirus-free" as you suggested. Don't know why

you sent me there but I downloaded AVG Antivirus Free once again.

7. Double clicked on "AVG_Antivirus_Free_692.exe", the file I just downloaded, to install AVG Antivirus Free.
The first screen that came up said "Preparing your AVG installation".
The next screen said, "Downloading Installation Components."
The next screen asked me to click on "Install Now."
The next screen said, "Downloading AVG Antivirus Free Edition".
Then it went to, "Installing AVG Antivirus Free Edition." but it was still downloading something.
Then the screen changed to the dreaded, "Installation Failed"!

My grandfather taught me something a long time ago. "If you do the same thing over and over expecting a different result, you are an idiot." I have been doing the same thing over and over and over. Does that make me an idiot?

I have scoured my entire C:\ drive for AVG. What about the Windows registration file I wondered? I did a Regedit and searched for AVG. There are a lot of references there. Could this be why AVG will not install?

I received an e-mail from AVG Customer Suoport. It said, in part, "Important: The Remote Support service is no longer available for Windows XP. If you have a Windows XP computer, we may not be able to assist you remotely."
