Remove grayed-out AVG app from StagedExtensions folder on a Mac

Hello,
I just renewed my AVG Ultimate subscription but have not been able to download AVG virus protection for the last year, because an old version is still installed. I was told to move the app to the trash, which I did, but now there is a remnant of 165 KB in Macintosh HD > Library > StagedExtensions > Applications.
I am only able to view it and "Get Info," I'm not able to delete, uninstall, or move it to the trash. I downloaded and ran AVG Clear, but it did nothing to solve the problem. All the directions I can find say to double-click and open the app, but it won't open, I just get a message that the file may be damaged or incomplete.
So basically I'm paying for this subscription for nothing until I can delete this remnant. All help is much appreciated.
