Hi, no errors just as exactly described above.
Yes I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling.
I would appreciate it if you could forward my post above to your team so they can review and hopefully fix this bug with Windows XP and Office XP/2003 with documents hanging when opened even after disabling scan documents in settings, disabling scan program files when ran and even adding My Documents folder and other folder with documents to exclusions.
My other issue is when turning off automatic virus definition updates program immediately starts hounding / bugging you by changing icon on task bar then when you click on icon program says you have no protection just because automatic virus definition updates were disabled although already up to date. My recommendation is for this warning to happen ONLY after a week or two. People don't like being bothered and hounded with program errors and warnings. I understand warning if definitions haven't been manually updated after a week but it's over sensitive and annoying to have latest definitions then immediately start doing this.
Again I am former computer tech, looks like a great product otherwise that I really wanted to use and I was considering buying the full version. I hope you guys can take this feedback seriously to improve the product and this issue can be addressed!
I hope I can use AVG in the future!
Thank you!
Hello Brian,
Thank you for reaching out to us.
Glad to know that you like our product(s).
Let's work together in this.
Other than hanging/slow, do you get any error or notification from AVG when you open those MS files?
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the AVG Free?
Since AVG updates regularly as the technology updates, Windows XP might also be the reason for this.
Unfortunately we do not have the option where you can install the old version of the AVG products.
You are welcome to share your feedback and I will make sure that it has reached the concerned team.
Hi, I wanted to try AVG and planned on eventually paying for the full version because I know it was good in the past and I wanted to stop using Symantec.
I am using Windows XP and Microsoft Office XP/2003. I installed AVG Free Antivirus and wanted to try because I really wanted to stop using Symantec.
The problem I had is AVG would cause Microsoft Word documents to open slowly and hang. This is an issue I never had with Symantec Antivirus (NIS)
I am a former long time computer tech with lots of experience so I figured no problem I went into settings and unchecked scan documents when opened. I also unchecked scan programs when ran and (it said programs such as Excel which is Microsoft Office). I then third added My Documents folder and another folder where I keep documents to exclusions.
I thought this would take care of the problem but even after disabling those 3 things the issue where it caused documents to open slowly and hang continued like it did not make a difference and was still trying to scan.
I even tried turning AVG off and it was like it was still trying to scan word documents and causing documents to hang where I have to force quit through task manager.
I also did not like that it changes icon on task bar and says protection disabled when you disable automatic virus definition updates. I like to do that manually so anti virus programs aren't running in background making my system run slower when trying to do something. I can't stand antivirus programs that hound you and tell you that you have no protection just because you turned off automatic updates and want to do it manually instead. My recommendation is program should remind the end user every week or two but not immediately when up to date.
I liked the program otherwise and seemed like a great product but unfortunately I had no choice but to uninstall AVG because of Office document issue and can't use it unless this is resolved in the future. I wasn't crazy about immediately being hounded that protection is disabled because I disabled automatic updates and wanted to update manually. Is there an older legacy AVG free version for Windows XP and Office XP/2003 that won't cause documents to hang?
Again I already tried disabling scan documents in settings. I also disabled scan programs when ran. Then I even added My Documents folder and other folder where my documents are located to "exclusions" and unfortunately it was like it made no difference.
I would still like to use this product in future and hope AVG fixes this because it looked like a great product otherwise. Please know I am a former computer tech.
I hope AVG can resolve this because again it looks like a great program otherwise and I was very disappointed not to be able to use it because of this issue. I was considering paying for the full internet security before this and I was considering paying.
Thank you
