Resident shield is not active

I just tried the repair link which was quoted in another post, but got this error message:

Help please!

I downloaded the AVG free version and once installed, it shows the warning that my computer is not protected…When I click on it for more info it says: Resident shield is not active
There's a Fix-now button which doesn't seem to be doing anything.
I uninstalled the whole lot and downloaded it again, but still have the same problem.
Has anyone out there a similar problem and what can I do to fix it?
