The pop-up you received might be from "Ransomware Protection". Open AVG Internet Security installed on your computer, click "Hacker Attacks" tab and select "Open" next to ransomware protection. Click on "Allow/Block" option and check if any application selected under blocked list.
If yes, please remove all the apps from the blocked list and check if that fix the issue.

I recently tried to open a document. A menu appeared which I think included the AVG logo and referring to an APP related to blocking. I was given an option to allow or not and must have chosen the wrong one. Now I am unable to open any document. Pictures etc are accessible. How do I get rid of that block.

Let us try alternate steps and check if that fix the issue.
Open AVG Internet Security, click on "Menu->Settings->Components", disable each component one at a time and check disabling which component fix this issue.
