Rootkit keeps coming back

Thanks for the update Caroline!

I need more help please. I still have this thing. It wont let me connect phone to PC now nor download the driver…AVG help

Hello Caroline,
We understand how something like this can really try your patience.
Could you please let us know the name of the AVG and version of AVG product you have installed in your pc? so that we are happy to assist you better.
Thank you.

For 6 days I have been running scan with AVG that says I have a high risk threat. I resolve it and boot but when I scan it is there again. "";"Hidden directory, C:\";"Secured"

"Learn more" in AVG link takes me to "Rootkit_Hidden_Directory is a potential threat. Threats, when malicious, can be used to interfere with the normal operation of a computer, gather personal information or allow a hacker to access the device remotely without the user's consent.
This kind of software usually arrives in the form of an unwanted download from a malicious website or as code illegally injected into a legitimate website without the webmaster's knowledge. It can also be received as an email attachment or an instant message from an untrusted source."

which scares me.
How and why cant I remove it permentely?

Please open your malwarbytes again and go to settings>detection and protection> put a check on "scan for rootkits" . this would take more time to scan the computer but its worth it.

Hi Caroline,
I would suggest that you run Malwarebytes Anti-rootkit as your 2nd opinion tool. You download it from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-rootkit/ . Update us if it did find anything .

I Have Malwarebytes and ran it. Didnt pick up anything.
Vista 32bit?

I have the free/trial version of AVG Internet Security. I have had the other version for years until this problem so I updated to Internet Security. I run scans every few days and re boot, and update regularly.

Hope this helps.
I have also found out I have no restore points and I know I had system restore turned on.
I tried to turn it back on but it wont.
Really worried now.
