I can understand your concern. This pop-up's generally occur when you download or access any unwanted web site. These websites install unwanted extension or program along with a genuine program which causes this issue. As this applications are installed with user permission, it will not be detected as threat. Today my PC was infected when Scamming SW froze MS Edge, telling me to call a MS toll free number to solve the problem. I didn't fall for it, and Google searched instead to Find that others that called the number found that the receiver asked for $150 to have the Trojan Horse cleared.
Google search supplied the following link and instructions to remove it. See below:

This is apparently not new, and has been lingering for a few years.
Question: Why is AVG not detecting it, and preventing it from taking over the various browsers that have been infected?
