Hold the cavalry, it has solved itself. All it needed were a few hours to ruminate. After a distinctly lengthy period it realised it had indeed hung up and offered a restart or "Advanced options" to sort the problem. I went for the restart expecting a few more hours of inactivity, but no it zipped through the rest of its tests and loaded W10 as if nothing had happened.

Thorough scan/ repair. This program has hung up at 12% complete. Did they get the apprentice to write this? How do you stop it? Power off/ on doesn't do the trick. I'm about to lose 6hours of my life loading W10!!
