Scanning and repairing system drive

In fact I was advised to "simply let it run" - pretty well indefinitely. This I did, and, to my surprise, after some 4 hours showing the "10% complete" message the screen suddenly went blank - and then showed 100% complete… since when it seems ok. 
I am sure I shall never understand computers!

I have just downloaded AVG performance pro - on another pc!  I used Disk Doctor to check system drive (C:), and it claimed to have scanned and repaired it.  I was told to restart Windows to complete this task. However, on doing so, I get as far as "Scanning and repairing drive (C:): 10% complete" and no further. It seems to have "jammed" at this point. I can't simply "switch off" as the on/off button does not respond. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting but it simply starts again, and then stops at the "10% complete" stage. Please can anyone help?!
