Scanning stuck at 1%; can't stop or pause

Hello Dave,
We are sorry to hear about the inconvenience caused. It has been confirmed that this is caused due to a conflict with one of the Windows security updates. Please reinstall Visual C++ Redistributables package (both x64 and x86) from the website: http://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=30679

I also went to the AVG web site and tried to simply install the program again.  It got to about the 95% point of the installation and then provided these error codes:

General Error:  0x0426
and
Error:  0xC0070426

I appear to be stuck…  as my computer runs extremely slow now… I assume that's connected Watchdog consuming CPU resources.  Thing else even comes close… with most active programs registering 0%.

Windows did an automatic update yesterday (it looks like a major one as several other things seem different now on my computer)… and now my AVG Internet Security program gets stuck at 1% and won't finish scanning.

When I go to Task Manager… the active program hogging all the resources is AVG Watchdog (80-90%).  As a result… other older programs are now crashing because they don't have enough memory, etc.

I have Version 16.131.7924 / with setup 1.143.2.51391.  Using Windows 10.

I've never had a problem with AVG before… and can't see anything I can do that will help.

Thoughts??

Dave

New install appears to have been successful.  PC back to running at normal speed now.  Quite the journey.  Thanks for your help along the way…
