Scheduled scan doesn't

…so I downloaded and ran Clear, then rebooted, I downloaded and ran and Remover, plus rebooted a couple of times, then downloaded and ran Antivirus_Free_1817.

…and guess what?  Scheduled scans are still stuck on 0% progress:

I've got two machines in this state, one W7 Ultimate, the other XP.  I haven't checked two others yet, but a fifth (W7 Home Premium) seems to run scheduled scans OK.

There is something badly broken with AVG Free 2017 (17.3.3011) and I'm beginning to doubt that AVG knows what that is

Hello D Cannon,
We regret for the inconvenience caused. We would request you to repair http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-repair-AVG the AVG program and check whether it can resolve the issue at the earliest. Thank you for understanding.

Thanks for your offer, but no thanks.  I appreciate you are the 'White Hat' guys, but I'm not going to do this.  I have been chasing problems with AVG 2017 on three desktops and a couple of laptops for a month now (see my various posts here), and it seems that with each 'update' various problems reappear, and the cure mostly comes down to 'Uninstall, run Clear, run Remover, perform clean reinstall - with a few machine reboots interspersed.

I noticed that the initial release (17.3.3011?) was replaced at some point with …3043 (?) and various machines exhibited problems, then AVG reverted back to …3011 and more problems cropped up, specifically this one.  If anything is as bad as running with no antivirus product, then it's running with one that cannot be relied on.

AVG 2017 cannot be relied on.

While sending you SysInfo data on this last problem I have ripped AVG 2017 out of four of the five machines, and replaced it with [alternative antivirus product name].

I've just done the same on this fifth machine.

I'm sorry to leave AVG.  Up until AVG's merger with Avast and the 2017 version it was a solid product, but this release is an unreliable, broken thing.  I hope the diagnostics you've received from my machine help resolve some of the faults, and maybe someday I'll try again.  All the best, Dave C

Hi.  I see that it is still not possible to add an image to a question - there is no 'Upload Image' tab, only a 'Web Address' tab after I click on the 'Mountain' symbol, so I will have to answer my own question in order to post an image.  Good to know you're on the case.

I've set up a scheduled scan (AVG Free, Windows 7) to run at 15:00 every Wednesday.  After two and a half hours there was no movement (0%) on the progress bar.  I stopped it.  Then I started that same scan manually.  It's progressing fine.  This is a problem.

D Cannon,

Sorry to hear that the issue persists even after performing repair. In this case, we request you to reinstall your AVG free version and check with the issue.

Please download and run AVG Clear tool: https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/AVG_Clear.exe. This tool will help with removing antivirus component of AVG 2017 and its traces.

1.Open tool
2.User Account control - click "Yes"
3.Windows safe mode - click "No" (we cannot recommend use the tool in safe mode, because there is a problem with compatibility)
4.Choose installed version (AVG Free, AVG Internet Security)
5.Click "Uninstall"
6.Click "Restart computer"

After restart, run AVG Remover http://avgclick.me/UninstallAVGAV and remove all other supported products and remnants of AVG (ZEN, Framework).

Now you can proceed with the installation of AVG free version as suggested here: http://avgclick.me/InstallFree. If the issue persists, please do let us know we will assist you further. Thank you!
