Scheduled scans and last scan date

Dear Avinash,

Regarding your latest email.
When performing a manual scan the progress bar is visible and also details of which files are being scanned. These seem to be only system files and not my personal files/folders.

With regard to my scheduled daily computer scan sometimes this scan shows the progress bar immediately under the symbol of the running scan which is visible on my computer screen and it shows all the files/folders being scanned.

At other time [like this morning for instance] the scheduled daily computer scan started but although the symbol of the running scan was visible and working there was no progress shown, this showed 0% throughout the whole scan. There was a progress icon on my task bar so I could see that the scan was progressing. However, the only way I had of knowing that the scan was complete was when this task bar icon disappeared – at this point the scan was still showing as running on my computer screen  but the progress bar was still showing 0%. This scan continued to run and run – I  clicked the “stop scan” button but this had no effect and I had to shut down AVG to get this scan to stop.  The “last scan” shows as 2 days ago when the scan finished just a few moments before.

As far as any customization made with my scheduled scan under the section “Scan Areas“ I have “all hard drives” selected.

Regards, Joan

Hello Alok,

I carried out the instructions in your latest email i.e. I repaired AVG then did a reboot and then a complete scan using the “scan computer” button. This scan again took just a couple of minutes to complete. I then selected my scheduled daily scan and selected “scan now”. First it scanned for root kicks and advised me my “browser was ok.”  I clicked “ok” and then the scan started and showed that it was searching for “viruses & other Malware”. This scan took the usual time to complete of approx. 1 hour and the progress bar showed the correct percentage as the scan was progressing. However, when the scan had finished the date of my last scan showed as “a day ago”.

This morning I waited for my scheduled daily scan to start at 8.00am. The scan started as scheduled but after well over an hour the progress bar showed just 60% completed. I left the room and came back five minutes later and the scan had finished. How could the scan take over an hour to scan 60% and just five minutes to scan the remaining 40%? The date of my last scan still shows as “a day ago”.

As I said in my earlier e-mail I am losing faith in AVG. I have no idea if my computer is being scanned correctly?  I look forward to your comments.

Regards,
Joan

Hello Joan,

This isn't the experience we want you to have and I apologize for the inconvenience caused.

AVG User Interface will show the “Last scan run” data only if you press "Scan Computer" floating button manually and not for any other scans. However, in the upcoming release of AVG the quick scan, deep scan and full comp scan or scheduled scan should be updated too.

Please repair AVG Internet security from the control panel and click on Scan computer button to check the status. If the issue persists, please provide the screenshot of it to assist further.

Hello Joan,
Please accept my apologies with regards to the AVG software not living up to your expectations. AVG Internet Security whole computer scan should take more then 2 minutes (time is depends on disk size). In this case, I request you to repair AVG Protection (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-repair-AVG), and reboot your computer once. After reboot, please run a complete scan using AVG Internet Security by clicking "Scan computer" button.
Best regards,
Alok.

Bhuvaneswari,

In response to your email, I performed a manual scan and the date of my last scan showed this scan as having been performed “a few seconds ago ” which was correct. However when my scheduled scan starts each morning the scan takes up to an hour to finish but the manual scan I’ve just done was completed in 2 minutes. How can I know if the scan actually scanned correctly when it was this fast.

Some time after this manual scan had finished my scheduled daily scan started. Even though the scan was showing on my computer screen with the “magnifying glass going round a computer screen” which is normal, what was not normal was that the progress bar was showing Zero the whole time. On the task bar the AVG icon was showing that a scan was taking place as this showed a green line advancing across the icon. When the scan had finished the icon on the taskbar disappeared but the magnifying glass etc. on my computer screen continued to show a scan taking place and still showing Zero progress. I had to manually stop this scan. The time of this most recent scan did not record but still showed the time of my first manual scan. I would add that in the past I have also had the problem with a scan showing as taking place but the progress never changing from Zero.

As for your comment that, and I quote “Last scan run date only if you press Scan Computer floating button manually and not for any other scans.” This is clearly not the case as in the past every time my scheduled scan starts in the morning the last scan run time shows the time of this scan correctly.
I would like answers to these points please. As I said in my original message I am quickly losing faith in AVG as I have had so many problems like this in the past few months. It seems that each time one of these errors is corrected there are more that appear.

Joan

Over the last day or so my daily scheduled scan disappeared. [it's only a few weeks since it started working again after the last AVG update.] The date of my last scan also shows in red as 4 months ago. I have rescheduled my daily scan and it seems to be working [pat the moment]  but the date of my last scan still shows in red as 4 months ago. Why is this?

My automated updates sometimes work and sometimes I have to perform these manually.

I have checked and I have the latest AVG update - version 18.1

What on earth has happened to AVG. I have used this product for years but I have encountered so many problems over the past few months that I am losing all confidence in it.

Joan,

May I know if you had any customization made with your scheduled scan like which area need to be scanned for example? The 'Scan computer' button on AVG interface is a quick computer scan but not the whole computer scan. May I know if the progress bar is moving in case of the manual scan with details of which file is being scanned?

Thank you for the detailed information.
In this case, it is necessary for us to analyze what is causing this issue.
Hence, I request you to get our additional support for which an email instruction has been sent.
