Hello Steve,
We regret to hear about the inconvenience caused. By default, the AVG clock is set in 24 hours format. Please disable this task and enable it again in Scheduled scan settings and then run repair installation of AVG.
To repair your AVG please follow these instructions:

Go to Start -> Control Panel.
Note: Click Settings first if Control Panel is not available in the Start menu.
Open (Programs) -> Programs and Features, or Add or Remove Programs.
Select AVG in the list of programs.
Click the Change or Change/Remove button.
Select Repair.
Follow the instructions on your screen to complete the installation.
Restart your computer.

"why has ACG lost the ability to tell the time"?

The scheduled scan is set for 0500Hrs, yet it starts the scan at 1700Hrs?

My system date and time are correct!
