Hello Emil,
I understand the inconvenience. It would be helpful if you could provide the screenshot of the popup to check and assist further.
Especially when I open Chrome, this browser keeps coming up even after a complete scan for malware done overnight. Any way to rid myself of this pest? THANKS

It seems that "Any search" is appearing as your default search Engine. So please follow the below steps to change the Search Engine in Safari browser.
Step 1: Open Settings. Click on Safari in the top Apple menu bar, then select Preferences.
Step 2: Change your homepage to Google. Next to New windows open with, select Homepage from the drop-down menu.
Step 3: Change your default search engine to Google.
Also, please remove that "Any search" search Engine from the list.
