This is the expected behavior.

You may sometimes experience a slower internet connection when using Secure VPN. This is because VPN encrypts traffic and data before sending it to a server. Depending on the distance and capacity of the server, this process may cause a slightly slower, but safer, internet connection.

Are you experiencing the slow internet only in your browser?

Purchased and installed VPN. Since then every time I connect VPN my browsing slows down very noticeably - almost unusable. When I disconnect VPN browsing returns to normal.
Does this on both Chrome and Edge.

We certainly understand your point, Colin.
But as explained, this is expected behavior as the traffic is routed through a VPN server. Could you try connecting to a different location in AVG Secure VPN and monitor?
