I've just recently installed AVG & now every time I open an email a security alert pops up which I have to clear before I can proceed. What's going on here & what's the solution please?

Hello Alistair. Thank you for providing the requested information. The alert you are receiving is not from AVG but it is from IE web browser. Please follow the below instructions,

From IE's Tools menu, choose Internet Options.
Click the Security tab.
Click the Custom Level button.
Locate the setting Don't prompt for client certificate selection when no certificates or only one certificate exists, and click the Enable radio button.
