I'm trialling AVG Internet Security which includes Sensitive Data Shield. I'm finding when I open Sensitive Data Shield it just hangs / freezes, and the only way to close it is to use Task Manager.
Any suggestions as to how to get Sensitive Data Shield working so I can encrypt files / an external hard drive? I would post screenshots but I don't know how to in this forum.

This isn't the usual behavior of AVG program. As repair failed to help us, let us perform a clean installation to check. 
Here are the links which has the steps to uninstall (http://https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Uninstall-AVG-software-Clear-Remover) & reinstall (http://https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Download-and-install-AVG-Protection).
Note : You can skip the Remover tool during the uninstallation process.
To activate : Open AVG - My AVG (at top right) - My subscriptions - Login to AVG account (using the same email address that you've used to reach us)

Thank you, I've now uninstalled and reinstalled the product, however despite logging in and the product confirming my subscription as active, "full protection" product features are not availaible to me.
