Hello John,
I can understand your concern. Please be informed that the email setting needs to be configured only in the older version of AVG. In the latest version, it will be auto configured and you do not have to manually change any settings. This Advanced settings feature is available only in the older version of AVG.
I recently returned to AVG free antivirus (after two years of McAfee). I just ran the free download, and then I eyeballed the settings. I see that if I go to the one option on the home screen available to me (Antivirus Free / Basic Protection, the options taking me to offers of other products for sale), then the left two items (Computer, Web and Email) are checked and protected. Also, if I go to Settings, Components, Email protection, Customize, I see that the options to scan incoming and outgoing mail are checked. Sounds great! Still, I seem to remember that, back when, I had to set up Thunderbird and AVG in a more complex way, stipulating an ISP in Thunderbird and the actual pop account in AVG. I found a page online telling me to go to Advanced Settings, but I don't even see Advanced Settings, so that can't be it. Am I just fine, or is there something I'm missing? Thanks!
Also, thanks for putting up with the blunder, I see now, of ISP for IP address.
