Shortcut virus or malware

I would have to go through the whole of system restore to get the screenshot so will this please suffice because it is a generic message which I have seen reported by others on the internet throughout my search for an answer? I am asking you because the answers that I found do not seem to work. I copied this message below from another post online. The message I get says:

System restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:
System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer.
Temporarily disable your antivirus program and retry system restore.

An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x80070005)

The MS system message says : The program has been virused and cannot open.

I switched off the windows firewall and defender and disabled avaast and removed it and the system showed the same. I tried safe mode using the steps indicated in forums. I tried removing avg, got the same message and then reinstalled it again etc.

I am using Win7 and tried using Malwarebytes's fully fledged premium program but even though it found malware and removed it, when I disabled it fully so there would be no message issue, and made sure that defender and firewall are off and used safe mode, it did not work.

Because I get the error message from my system, avg did not open. I tried using different restore points but that does not help.

I ran deep scans with avg but it did not find anything. I removed avg because I thought that the program was virused and the actual threat. I tried reinstalling it and did not find any virus in deep scan mode. I tried rootkit scan. Then I removed avg.

The malware or virus removed about 60 percent of my desktop shortcuts.

I never had to disable windefender and firewall when doing system restore on any occasion before and I think that I did not have to with avg either but I cannot remember.

I bought my pc secondhand about a year ago and it did not come with a Windows OS disc.

Hello James,
Thank you for contacting AVG Community Support.
We are really sorry to know this. We'll certainly check and help you out.
Please help us with the screenshot of the error message that informed AVG stopped the restore process. Also, share us the screenshot of the message that informs AVG itself being virused. You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on Answer & then click on the Image [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.

Next, do you get any error mesage while opening AVG ?
Was that a particular set of shortcuts went disappearing or you noticed all the desktop shortcuts went deleted?
As you are sure that there is a presence of virus, apart from the regular smart scan; have you checked the deep scan/boot time scan in AVG ?
Please share us the results of deep scan and boot time scan.
Awaiting your response.

Hi I have been virused with something that removes my desktop shortcuts but does not place them in the recycle bin, it deletes them completely. I tried going to a restore point but each time it either says that my antivirus is stopping the restore process or, it goes back but when I try to open AVG, my computer shows an error message which states that AVG itself has been virused and the AVG program does not open. I tried usiing the AVG Clear removal tool to replace my antivirus with an uncorrupted, new version but, after not very long, the shortcuts disappeared again. I tried using Avast to see if it would help but it didn't pick up any virus which means that it is not finding it either. So neither AVG picks it up nor Avast and I have not used any USB sticks etc which would have loaded something onto my system. I googled and checked out many links, but so far, the solutions have not worked. I am a tad scared to use some of the lesser known antivirus programs becasue they sometimes seem to be run by scammers who give you bigger problems.
While I tried to send this message by going to the 24/7 consultation option in the AVG menu, it repeatedly shows that it cannot send because I am supposedly offline, yet I am able to go to various websites. Can you please advise about that as well?
