Slow computer and Malware?

In spite of my dashboard indicating my notebook (Win 7 64 bit) is 100% optimized it takes 2 to 3 minutes before I have a workable desktop after power-up?
It gets even worse when I then try to open my Firefox browser?
How does Malware get to infect my PC and take-over my browser?
When I power-up my PC for the first time what does AVG Zen do that slows down my PC?
