Smart Scan "hanging"

Hi,
Just run Smart Scan twice and it did not complete on either occasion, “hanging” at the 98/99% stage of performance issues. Before running a second time I asked for a repair of AVG. I am using AVG Antivirus Free on a 64 bit Windows 10 computer. A while back I had a deep scan “hang” and after turning off my computer and re-starting things did not look good such that I resorted to System Restore before things seemed right again.
Any thoughts?
