Hello Robert,
We regret to hear about the inconvenience caused. The new update for AVG Anti-Virus free has included AVG Zen. AVG Zen is an user interface and we can mange and access all your AVG installed devices from Zen. The new updates will be available only for AVG 2017 version. The new version has enhanced features. It also has the specific file scan under Scan settings. The new scan features includes Boot time scan, Full computer scan, Deep virus scan, Schedule scan, USB or disc scan and File or Folder scan. Please, feel free to let us know if you require any further assistance.
Thank you.
I've seen Zen. It's been around. But alas, as I described, the new from scratch install of AVG free appears to have no actual functionality above this superfluous Zen container client. It may be an issue with a bad installer, rather than an intentional change. Whatever the reason, it makes this a pointless waste to install.
So, for now, I have removed it and am using Comodo, with hopes that such issues (including the focus stealing) will be addressed in future updates of AVG. AVG has been a really nice A/V solution, with a small footprint and convenient controls for turning it off completely, so I hope to be able to come back to it.

It started with the new update stealing focus, which I posted about here earlier. Thinking perhaps a fresh installation would sort it out I came to realize that AVG is not easy to get rid of. Even the removal tools don't get the job done. I had to boot to safe mode, delete files, and weed it out of the registry, where it sows itself liberally. But I do that, and then... with a little trepidation but wanting to give it a chance, I install AVG free again.
This time I seem to get something that doesn't have much functionality. Zen and little else I can see. I give it a couple of days but it really does not seem to be doing anything, plus I no longer have UI integration for specific file scans or to disable the scanner on demand. This will not do. Now I've gone through the manual removal again, as despite the limited functionality it was no less resistant to uninstalling than the last time.
I'll check back occasionally to see what people are saying about future updates, but for now I'm done. You folks fixed what wasn't broken, and it put me out as much as any virus or trojan infection I ever had.
