Maybe your problem is fixed by now, but I had the same issue.
If you access the vius vault, it's likely that you'll find a "virus" (it'll actually be called a general fix or something like that) with two yellow circles. If you look at the details of this virus, there'll be a bunch of files starting with HKEY. Have AVG restore the files. If it asks, have it replace any files.
This is a problem many users have experienced with windows 8.1 and AVG in tandem. This didn't work for me (I had to restore my computer), but a lot of people reported success with this technique.

I was using my computer with the sound working, and the automatic update of AVG antivirus started installing. After the install was finished, the sound no longer worked. AVG says that the sound not working has nothing to do with AVG!!! What a horrible customer service response. AVG has ruined my computer since my main use for my computer is sound for live performances.
Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this? I've run a system restore and disabled AVG antivirus, but neither worked.
Windows 8.1 error message end point is a duplicate.
