Hi Sreedevi and Alan

Thank you so much for your replies; I was preparing to take a photo of the screen, had left my PC unplugged for a couple of hours - when, on switching on,it did a normal start up; but I have taken this as a warning!!! I will be getting a new computer asap and will not use the old one until I can just copy the contents to the new one...had a big fright there. All my work files are on it...

Hi I have Windows XP - I was just about to replace it! - having worked OK it is now having trouble starting up - it starts up and stops abruptly. When I startup in Safe Mode it gets stuck at the file name ending DRIVERS/avgidshx.sys. Please, any help gratefully received. - Thank you  -

Helo Jo,
Pleased to know that you are able to boot your computer in normal mode.
It is recommended to upgrade your operating system as support for windows XP is stopped by Microsoft and no update is available for windows XP.
It is required for better performance of all applications in your computer.
