Subscription payment yet no service

Having previously had an AVG subscription and found the service very good, my subscription lapsed at a random time and I reloaded the free Antivirus protection. I now find I've been billed for an annual subscription which I did not take out and for which I have not received any service. I see from the comments that I am not alone in this. 

I'd like to know how to escalate this complaint as it seems very difficult to talk to someone to sort this.
