Surely I am not alone

Hello Henry, If there is no available wireless network nearby then what you did was right. To view the available wireless networks please follow the instructions mentioned in this article http://bit.ly/1lxUAXF . After trying this and if you end up with no wireless networks  nearby then what you followed was right. I would suggest you to try in some places where you have public wireless network providers (shopping mall) etc.

In a tutorial artivle by AVG How to Boost Your Wi-Fi Signal for Better Home Internet there are instructions concerning finding a suitable wifi channel, part of which reads

"Step 1 – Launch the command line. To do that, click on the Start orb, go to „All ProgramsAccessories“ and click on „Command Prompt“.

Step 2 – Type in the following command: netsh wlan show all".

I live in an estate with house close by, but when I have used the command line, it is my connection only that shows up. I find that strange. Am I doing something wrong
