Task Host Window preventing shut down

Since renewing AVG last month I cannot shutdown automatically and my laptop has slowed considerably. On shutdown I get the message 'Task Host Window is stopping background tasks' I then have to manually override to close down. Have used the MS instructions to try and clear the fault. This instructs to use the Task Manager start-up tab and disable all the start up actions and then reboot to clear the system. I can disable all except the AVG ui restarter (dated June 2016), this appears to be  duplicated by this years renewal of AVG. How do I resolve this problem?
