The problem is recent, since say 2 weeks ago, until now.

If the issue persists when AVG protection is disabled, it could not be caused by AVG. If yours is a web based email, try a different web browser to open the email.

Let's check whether AVG is causing the issue.
Please disable AVG temporarily and check if that helps. Right click on AVG icon under system tray next to clock, click on toggle bar to disable it.
Are you trying to access e-mails through web browsers or through e-mail clients?
If you could share the screenshot (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en&urlname=How-to-create-a-screenshot) of the error message, we will be able to get a clarity and assist further.

AVG disabled and problem continues. I can't see how AVG could be the problem now.
