Thunderbird cannot send when VPN is on

Everytime I try to send an email, using Thunderbird, with the VPN switched on I get the following message and an unsent email.
An error occurred while sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting:  5.7.1 Connection refused - OB115. 5.62.22.210 is blacklisted. If you believe this to be in error, please contact p**r@bigpond.com.
If I switch the VPN off the email goes successfully.
Please can you help me.
