Following up, I figured out the issue as I was elevating the issue. It turns out a feature of my VPN was interfering when AVG's e-mail sheild was activated. After disabling NordVPN's Threat Protection feature, my e-mail worked fine again with everything enabled in AVG.

It seems AVG is/was blocking Thunderbird from performing automatic updates - it seems to be a well documented issue, but maybe it is fixed now, because I think I got updated to a new version automatically recently.
Now it seems to be preventing e-mails from being sent. I'm using Thunderbird 102.4.0 in Windows 11 and I was getting an error when sending emails:
cannot connect to smtp server: connect error 10060
I had no issues sending e-mails or managing my the folders and inbox after disabling shields on AVG AntVirusFree.
Glad to know that, John. Appreciate your technical knowledge.
Thank you for updating the status. Have a great day. Stay safe!
I followed the aritcle to repair AVG. I still have to disable the E-mail Shield to send e-mails.

I can confirm that sending e-mails works fine if the Email Sheild is turned off even if all the other components are active. If I enable the Email Sheild, e-mails cannot be sent and I can't sort/move messages to other folders to keep them organized.
