Thunderbird freezes - AVG blamed

I run AVG Internet security 2015 on Win 8.1 64 bit.

I use the  Mozilla Thunderbird email client v. 38x and it frequently freezes for short periods with the 'not responding' error message in the title bar. Members of the Thunderbird forums suggest that this is due to the AVG real-time scanner scanning the Thunderbird profile folder and this folder should be excluded from real-time scans. I don't know how to do this could somebody guide me please?
