Sarath, thank you for your support. After disabling AVG the problem persisted and so it was evident that AVG was not responsible for the issue.
After further investigation I found that the incoming server settings had been altered and once restored to the correct settings my emails began arriving again.
I use Thunderbird as my email client and emails are imported from my Gmail account. All was working correctly this morning and emails could be received and sent. There was an update to my AVG Internet Security this morning which I carried out. Since then Thunderbird no longer downloads new emails and I wonder whether the new version of AVG is the cause of this problem.
