Hello Barbara
After you install AVG first installation. Is Needed update and full system scan. First scan is thorough, it takes longer.

If necessary you can reinstall AVG the following way

I installed AVG tonight and it started to scan about 2 hours ago. It is still scanning. How long should this take?
