Timeouts waiting for avgwd service

I have AVG 2016 Free + Zen installed.  Whenever I insert or remove a USB device, there's a long (about 20 to 30 sec) delay before the Autoplay begins resp. before I see the "Safe to remove hardware" balloon.  Looking in the events recorded by the Event Viewer, under System, I see these messages from Service Control Manager around the time these delays happened:

Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the avgwd service.

I think these messages happened also before the upgrade to AVG 2016, but the delays are new.
How can I fix this annoying problem?
This is Windows XP SP3, by the way.

Thanks.

Hello Eli,
We regret for any inconvenience caused to you. Could you please disable AVG temporarily ( http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-disable-AVG ) and check if the issue is resolved?
You could try to run repair installation of AVG once to fix any issues:
Go to Start -> Control Panel.
Open (Programs) -> Programs and Features, or Add or Remove Programs.
Select AVG Protection in the list of programs.
Click the Change or Change/Remove button.
Select Repair.
Follow the instructions on your screen to complete the installation.
Restart your computer.
Please, feel free to let us know if you require any further assistance. Thank you.

You are most welcome.
If the issue still persists even after disabling AVG antivirus then the issue isn't because of AVG.
However you can still perform repair installation of AVG and check if there is any difference in the Autoplay messages.

Thanks for responding.

I tried disabling AVG before I insert the USB device, but the problem with the Autoplay delay didn't go away, and I still see timeout events in the Event Viewer at the time I tried this.

Should I still try repairing the AVG installation, or does this mean repairing the installation is unlikely to solve this problem?
