Trojan Horse Generic

Hi all,

I've tested it today and it latest installation file (gimp-2.8.14-setup.exe; downloaded from CNET) is clean. It looks like the false positive detection which may unfortunately happen time to time.

Please let me know if the situation persists on your computers or if there is anything else.

@Mike: The dialog can either move the file to vault (smaller than 30MB) or remove it from the HDD directly. However this depends on type of detection and file location.

Have a good day and thank you for your participation.

Regards,

Jan

Yeah Marvin, I've had Gimp for quite a while. I have a lot of photos. Sorry for the delay here. I just got back to town.

I'm aware of all of that mess those downloads attempt to silenty pass down to you and am quite careful on passing on them. Adobe the most recent.

I just now turned my laptop on, as I was reading these two replies, and AVG pops up with a box within a minute asking if I wanted to remove the virus warning me of it, I say yes, and it warns me of it's size and asks again. I say yes and it does so. That is it tells me that it has been removed.

OK, it wouldn't let me do it myself yet it does it on it's own? hmmm

Doing a scan today AVG shows 1 virus. It shows to be the Trojan Horse Generic.

Threat: MalSign.Generic.B09
Object Name: C:\Documents and Settings\users\Downloads\gimp-setup.exe
Severity: Medium
State: Infected
Identied by: Scan
Date: 8/29/2014, 3:01:27 PM
Action error: Objetct is bigger than the archive size limit.

It will not allow you to remove the virus since it is supposedly too big.

"Object is bigger then maximum allowed size(30MB)
C:\Documents and Settings\users\Downloads\gimp-setup.exe
Do you really want to Remove this object?

In red, to the far right side of box the pops up when you click 'view details' it says 'cannot be removed. Moved Objetct is bigger than the archive size limit."

Are you to leave this? Is my computer/laptop safe?

thanks

Hi Mike, so Gimp is photo-editing freeware and the installer is stored in Downloads? So it should be possible to delete the installer in the usual way, then empty the recycle bin. Freeware installers often include adware, toolbars, etc. Even tracking cookies are "Medium" severity. If you already installed Gimp, I hope you were careful to uncheck any unwanted options!

Mike, To check out for a false detection have you tested the file @ VirusTotal (http://www.virustotal.com/) to check for detection ratio between several AntiVirus vendors?.
